Chapter Nine

A pinkish haze came over Cassander’s vision as the sun peeped over the horizon. Blisters were beginning to appear on his exposed skin and when he looked at Henry, the same puffy little spots were appearing on his face. Small wisps of smoke seeped from the pimples. They were beginning to cook. Blinking rapidly, he felt angry tears roll over his bottom lashes, chilling as the bitter wind whipped past them. Merde, they weren’t going to make it at this rate. Perhaps on his own, Cassander could have, but not with one as young as Henry in tow. He flicked his eyes around. There had to be somewhere, anywhere they could hide, just for the day. It would have to be somewhere they weren’t going to be disturbed. Henry yanked on his sleeve, stopping Cas momentarily. He was obviously thinking the same thing. They were never going to find safety now.

“There’s an old shoe factory around here somewhere. It’ll be abandoned, boarded up, we can hide in there,” Henry panted.

Cassander nodded and turned his eyes to the front once again. He didn’t trust himself to respond with anything but a torrent of abuse. As if on cue, the greyish outline of a crumbling building loomed in the distance. Relief flooded through both of them as they darted toward it. With a swift kick, the tattered boards that covered the entrance way fell away in a puff of dust and the two vampires bounded inside. Henry fell to his knees and hung his head whilst Cas hunched over, sucking in gulps of oxygen, ignoring the film of grime that settled in his lungs. The air around them was thick and smoggy but it was at least dark.

The smell of mildew wafted around as they gazed around the abandoned building. Their skin began to tingle as the sunspots began to heal. Straightening up, Cas studied his hands as rosy pink flesh replaced the red puffiness. He was still shaking. He had never been that close to the dawn before. He had taken the only piece of advice Sebastien had ever given him very seriously, and now he could see why. Cas hadn’t actually known it would be quite the ordeal if he’d got caught in it momentarily, but he was going to do his damnedest to make sure that it would not happen again, to either of them. He straightened his back, his head already swimming with exhaustion. Whipping out his handkerchief, Cassander wiped his stinging eyes and nose. Crimson smudged across the white material. It was already happening. They needed to find somewhere to sleep, and fast.

Cassander smoothed his tongue over his cracked lips, hoping to restore them to their former glory. He itched all over. The healing process would be a lot quicker if he simply licked his wounds, for want of a better phrase, but he couldn’t even stomach the thought of his own taste tonight and he certainly wasn’t going to let Henry have the honour. He almost chuckled to himself at how that imaginary conversation between them would go.
